Leave a gift in your Will

Your legacy can create brighter futures for vulnerable LGBT young people in Scotland

We rely on the support of individuals to keep our youth work services running. A gift in your Will would have a direct impact on the lives of vulnerable LGBT young people, helping us sustain our life-changing work, and supporting many more young people in the future.

Your friends and family will naturally be first in your thoughts when making a Will, but many people take the opportunity to leave a gift to a charity they have supported through their lifetime, or one that has had a personal impact on them, or a member of their family.

Your legacy will ensure that we can continue to make Scotland the best place to grow up for LGBTI young people. Even though social attitudes towards LGBT people are changing for the better, there is still a rising demand for our work as we see more young people seeking support at points of crisis in their lives often as a result of the painful impact of discrimination, rejection and isolation. Your legacy will enable us to continue supporting them when they most need it.

Leaving a gift in your Will is a very personal decision and you are under no obligation to tell us about your gift...however, if you feel able to, we'd love to keep you up to date with our work so that you're safe in the knowledge that your gift will have a lasting impact.

Our legacy promise to you

When you leave a gift to LGBT Youth Scotland in your Will, we promise:

  • We’ll answer any questions sensitively, honestly and quickly.
  • Your loved ones come first – we respect that.
  • We’ll use your gift wisely and effectively.
  • If you want your gift to be spent in an area that’s special to you, we can arrange that.
  • We won’t put you under any pressure – we know this is a big decision.
  • You can change your mind at any time.

First steps when making a will

Making things easy for the ones we love is always a priority, and dying without a Will can create many problems for those left behind, at an already difficult time. It often means long costly delays in administering your affairs. Your Will makes sure your wishes are carried out smoothly.

Here are some tips to help you make your Will:

  • Make a list – write down who you’d like to include in your will, such as family, friends and perhaps charities too.

  • Visit a solicitor – It's easy to leave a gift in your Will, as well as to update an existing Will. It’s best to visit a solicitor, to make sure your wishes for your family and any charities can’t be misunderstood later on. Many solicitors offer a free simple Will-writing service.

  • Think about how much you’d like to give – You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. Anyone can leave a gift in their Will, no matter how small or large, it will make a difference to the lives of LGBT young people that we support.

Types of gift

There are three main ways you can leave a gift in your Will:

  • Pecuniary gifts are specified sums of money. If you would like a gift of money to keep its value over the years, it is a sensible idea to ask your solicitor to index-link it.

  • Residuary gifts are made from whatever is left over once gifts of money and specific items have been distributed. You can give the whole of the ‘residue’ to a person or a charity like LGBT Youth Scotland, or a portion of it.

  • Specific gifts are things, such as a painting, a house or a ring.

Your solicitor will be able to explain this in more detail.
