Rosy's story

"I started volunteering for LGBT Youth Scotland in Jan 2016 at the beginning of my journey into Community Education. I was sure it would answer my big question of “What Am I Doing With My Life?” and in some ways, it has; opening many doors, making firm friendships (and flatmates) and giving me many different opportunities to explore a really colourful charity with a lot of heart.

I started volunteering with Sound Youth (13-17 years old) helping with youth groups and then I moved onto the digital team in my second year. At first I found working with young people really scary…. and then really empowering, kick starting a confidence in me professionally, that I have carried ever since, that no matter how small I may be (5’1 to be precise) I have a voice and an influence.

Being part of the digital team was a real honour. Mostly I answered emails from professionals, parents and young people alike but when I was lucky I spoke to young people 1-1 and, hopefully, made their lives a little bit easier in offering resources and kindness.

LGBT Youth supported me with trainings such as ASIST, Mental Health First Aid and regular trainings in essential topics to keep volunteers up to date. I always felt supported and part of a community, especially at events such as the annual Volunteer Conference. Above all, I have always felt appreciated and valued and I was so chuffed when I was asked to star in LGBT Youth’s Everyday Hero campaign. I used to hate public speaking but I have felt encouraged to say yes more and more and for that I give thanks to LGBT Youth and the wonderful people and wonderful work I have had the privilege of seeing unfold around me."
