Today, John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Life Long Learning and Deputy First Minister, launched Respect for All in the Scottish Parliament. Respect for All is Scotland’s national approach to anti-bullying. LGBT Youth Scotland is pleased to announce the launch of Addressing Inclusion: Effectively Challenging Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, which sits alongside Respect for All.
Developed in partnership with respectme, Addressing Inclusion aims to help primary and secondary education staff to challenge incidents of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in their schools. Research shows that 69% of LGBT young people had experienced homophobic or biphobic bullying in school and 77% of transgender young people had experienced homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic bullying in school.
This guidance will support teachers to ensure that they are able to recognise and respond to incidents of bullying. Additionally, it features practical advice in how to be proactive in ensuring that their schools are inclusive learning environments and learners understand and respect LGBT identities. This will help schools to prevent bullying before it starts; we believe prevention is the best method of responding to bullying.
