Adventures on Mull

Made possible thanks to funds raised by the Roses Trust, we sent a group of LGBT Young people from across Tayside, Forth Valley and Highlands to visit the Isle of Mull from the 1st to 5th of September. The adventure residential provided a fantastic opportunity for young people to build confidence, form new friendships and explore beyond their comfort zones.

LGBT Youth Scotland Youth Worker, Barry Jordan, explains more:
"12 young people set off on Friday morning from their homes around the country and met up in Oban before taking the ferry across to Mull. We spent our time there taking part in activities such a gorge walking, plunge pools (jumping off waterfalls), hiking, climbing, fire building and much more. The activities challenged both our physical and mental strengths. Young people got the opportunity to be filmed as part of the presentation from the National Children’s Lottery thanks to another grant awarded by the Roses Trust.

One particularly entertaining activity was the “The Tavool Challenge”, part of which involved “The Bog”, where young people were able to throw bog mud at their youth workers while trying to run across it. This residential was a chance for our young people to meet other LGBT Young people from across the country while trying some activities that they would not normally get to do, even with some other outdoor education providers."

One of the participants said:
"During my time in Mull I gained new experiences and new friends. I was able to push myself to try new things that I would not have the chance to do anywhere else, including jumping off a ledge into a tiny pool of water in the middle of no-where. My confidence has been boosted dramatically by talking to people I have never met before and establishing lasting connections with these people. It has also helped my mental health by being able to get away from everything and just have fun for the first time in ages".
