Despite the challenges of going virtual, Purple Friday 2021 turned out to be a roaring success! We were particularly thrilled to have our fundraising campaign rounded off the following evening with an exclusive Q&A hosted by the fabulous Dr Bev with none other than River City actor and long-time LGBT Youth Scotland supporter David Paisley.
In conversation with well-known Welsh drag queen Dr Bev, David talked about his life and career, as well as discussing why he believes the work of LGBT Youth Scotland is so important. He was joined by some exciting famous faces, including RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Divina De Campo, Faye Tozer of classic 90s pop group Steps, Holby City’s Chizzy Akudolu, River City co-star Kirsty Pickering and artist Nathan Wyburn, who unveiled a newly commissioned portrait of David to mark the occasion.
What a beautiful piece of art @NathanWyburnArt! Thank you for joining Dr Bev's @RJK1701 special Q&A with @DavidPaisley tonight and supporting #PurpleFriday with your wonderful portrait of David 💜 https://t.co/XsnC5kH0NR— LGBT Youth Scotland (@LGBTYS) February 26, 2021
Having accessed our services himself over twenty years ago, David has seen first-hand the life-changing difference that our work can make. He shared the story of his first experiences with LGBT Youth Scotland:
“I first got involved with LGBT Youth Scotland back in 1995. I found their number in the back of Young Scot magazine, which I found in the school library when I was about 14 or 15. I phoned the number and I had to go to the phone box because we didn’t have mobile phones in those days…I got such a fright when someone answered that I hung up immediately and it took me a whole year to work up the courage to phone again! I finally phoned again when I was 16, I went along and I joined the youth group, and that was the beginning of my coming out journey. My life has been increasingly more fabulous ever since so I’ve got a lot to thank LGBT Youth Scotland for!”
