LGBT Youth Scotland is excited to introduce our two new Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MYSPs): Amy Winter and Fin Buchan.
Amy and Fin were elected by their peers at LGBT Youth Scotland to represent them at the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) elections, which ran from 8-21 November.
Amy and Fin will serve a term of two years at the SYP, representing LGBT Youth Scotland as well as LGBT young people in Scotland. Their roles will involve consulting with their peers, campaigning, and sharing the views of LGBT young people in Scotland with decision makers.
Amy Winter is aged 19 and lives in Dundee. Commenting on her election, Amy said: "I am very excited and I am honestly truly honoured that people voted for me. I stood for MSYP because I felt I was ready to from a personal side but also because I was fed up of seeing things every day that I had solutions for that weren’t changing.
"I just can’t wait to get started, I am really looking forward to working with Fin and all the other young people at LGBT Youth Scotland. I just want to get stuck in making some real change for the better.
"I would also like to say thank you to everyone who voted and also thank you to the other candidate. It has really been an amazing few months with you guys and we all worked so hard and I’m really grateful for getting to know you all."
Fin Buchan is aged 18, from Falkirk. Commenting on their election, Fin said: "I'm really excited to have been elected, it's going to be a great opportunity!
"I stood for MSYP Because I want to make a difference in the lives of young LGBT+ people all across Scotland and I'm really looking forward to meeting all the other new members and making a start!"
Chief Executive of LGBT Youth Scotland Mhairi Crawford said: "At LGBT Youth Scotland our work is youth led, so the voices of LGBTI young people are at the heart of everything we do.
“In working to strengthen the rights of LGBTI young people across Scotland, youth participation is vital— and supporting young people in their roles as representatives in the Scottish Youth Parliament is an integral part of this.
“Being democratically elected by their peers, our MYSPs are crucial to ensuring that the views of LGBTI young people are heard on the issues that matter to them. We look forward to working with – and learning from – them over the next two years.
"We would also like to thank all the outstanding candidates who stood for election for the hard work, time and commitment they devoted to the election process.”
About our new MYSPs
About the SYP
The Scottish Youth Parliament is an entirely youth-led organisation based on Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) which states that “young people have the right to express their views freely and have their opinions listened to in all matters affecting them”.
SYP’s mission is to provide a national platform for young people to discuss the issues that are important to them, and campaign for changes to the nation that they live in.
