Accounting Firm Henderson Loggie have chosen to support LGBT Youth Scotland this Pride and become #partofthestory.
As part of celebrating and supporting Pride Month, we have been fundraising for LGBT Youth Scotland who are a fantastic charity doing incredible work across Scotland.
Along with this, we have hosted a staff lunch & learn session on terminology, barriers and challenges faced within the LGBTQ+ community and some best practices for becoming an LGBTQ+ Ally. Ali Kerr from LGBT Youth Scotland delivered the session, which was informative, helpful and positive with lots of takeaway practical tips to help us develop our LGBTQ+ awareness within Henderson Loggie.
We have also held a fundraising day including a rainbow themed bake sale and we have shared lots of helpful resources for staff throughout the month. Although we want to have fun, we appreciate that getting involved isn’t easy for everyone. We hope that being open and bringing Pride into our conversations will make being your authentic self, a lot easier at Henderson Loggie.
We spoke to one of our LGBTQ+ colleagues, Louise who gave us some powerful insights into her experience of working within the accountancy profession.
“I wouldn’t say I really notice the difference all that much. I think people’s home lives at work are generally kept quite private anyway, no matter who you are but when people have asked, I’ve been quite happy to say and only received support from them. I had a close friend at work that helped me quite a bit when only she knew, but the more people that know the easier it gets, and it doesn’t seem like such a taboo subject.”
“Work wise, I don’t see any difference at all, I’m treated exactly the same and can just be myself without a worry. I think workplaces and society in general have come a long way in a short space of time which is really good to see happening!”
“The main thing I would say about it is that it does drive me to work harder and achieve better things just to show other people that even if you’re maybe a bit different or go against societies “norms” you can still achieve highly and get to where you want to be in life.”
We want to make sure that our staff feel comfortable and safe to be who they are at work, so that we can help them achieve their potential. To do this, we understand the importance of creating an environment for LGBTQ+ people to thrive.
